Before you can physically design a composition, you first have to come up with a creative idea. We are all capable of envisioning what we want in our minds; however, it can be quite difficult to rely solely on our minds when we start the design. Our minds are full of great ideas, but also full of other things that can interfere with our great ideas.

Trying to rely on our envisioned design in our minds can be very distracting and will slow down the creative process. This is why a very important part of the design process is to first create a concept of how you envision your final design. Think of a concept design as a sort of prototype of your final design. 

Typography is the art of designing with type. Not every design project has to include images for it to be successful. As a matter of fact, many times images can take away from the message that you are trying to convey in a design.

Type is the basic building block of any printed page and/or website. Many times it will be absolutely imperative to design a page using more than one typeface. Knowing what typefaces work effectively together is extremely important for the design to be successful.

Design concepts can be changed from time to time and are crucial to branding and marketing a product or service. Conceptual design revolves around a meaningful concept or idea that conveys a message about a product or service. Our mind seeks to comprehend all visual experiences in terms of a background and a foreground, or as referred to in graphic design, figure and ground (an object and its setting). The figure also is called positive space, and the ground (the setting) is the background or backdrop.
